Sleep Improvement App for ResMed

In this 3-month class project at CMU, I took charge of researching ResMed and its customers in order to design a unique service that would adjust to users' needs during the Covid-19 pandemic. From this research, I designed Sound Sleep, a key feature that collects noise-related data from CPAP machines and provides therapeutic noise cancellation to users.

Background

ResMed is a medical equipment company that primarily provides cloud-connectable medical devices for the treatment of sleep apnea, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and other respiratory conditions. My team and I created Restful for our class project. Restful is an app that enables comfort with mask fitting, creates a quiet environment with Sound Sleep, and accumulates more accurate user data. Not only can it be a key component for future marketing strategies of ResMed, but can also play a role in the design of future marketing strategies through the various data that this service collects from potential users. Stakeholder / Value Flow Map

I conducted research on ResMed and created a stakeholder map and a value flow model. This map guided my team in understanding and fulfilling the needs of both internal and external stakeholders.

Customer Experience Research

I also led research on ResMed's current apps and its reviews on both the App Store and on Google Play. Many customers were unhappy about the lack of ability to see trends in mask usage and about the poor data accuracy, and wanted to see more details in what is being tracked and about their own health patterns. These user needs were used in designing the app features in order to provide value to ResMed by deepening its relationship with stakeholders.

My Role

From the customer experience research, I collaborated with my team to design an app that makes it easier for customers to find well-fitting masks, allows them to view their sleep data, and overall promotes better sleep comfort. I designed Sound Sleep, a key feature that collects noise-related data from CPAP machines and provides therapeutic noise cancellation to users.

Research to Insights

I also guided my team in using research insights to design a facial recognition feature that scans the user's face and suggests appropriate masks, since trying it on in store was not possible during COVID. Another design was the app dashboard, which includes details on sleep duration, apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) and how well the mask fit during the night, all of which addresses users' needs of wanting more detailed information about their sleep quality in relation to their sleep disorder.
